The Muslim in Malaysia, Malay, Indian, Chinese and other races, will celebrate the festival together with all Muslim from the world. In Malaysia, the politician and community will open their houses to Muslim friends and other non- Muslim friends, to celebrate the festival together. It is a public holiday in Malaysia, normally 2 days, but schools may take a longer holiday, normally a week. This is to enable the family to "balik kampong". Balik Kampong,in Malay literally means going back to the village, it is an annual activity during the Hari Raya festival. When the Muslim families from other places will return to their village(kampong in Malay) to celebrate the festival with their elders, and extended families in the village.
The chicken rousong (雞肉鬆)or Chicken floss,which is called "serunding"in Malay lamguage. It may also make from beef.
Self serving
Cutting lemang(bamboo rice). Lemang is Malay traditional food , rice cooked within hollowed bamboo which is laid with banana leaves to prevent the rice stick to the bamboo. Lemang is make from glutinous rice and coconut milk, with some salt added. It is mainly served during the Hari Raya festival. It is eaten with chicken curry. During the puasa or fasting month, you can see along the highway, sellers of lemang , cooking on the spot.
This is not lemang, but ketupat pulut, a Malay dumpling which is glutinous rice that have been wrapped in the woven fan palm leaf pouch of triangular shape, which is then boiled. Normally it is eat with rendang(dried curry of beef or chicken). The ketupat is also called ketupat daun palas. It is served normally on Hari Raya festival.
