To understand Xinjiang(新疆) please read article by www.wikipedia.org. Xinjiang Province in China has a long history, longer than when Hawaii joined USA, longer than Scotland united with England, and many of the history in Europe including the founding of nation of Turkey. To ignore the historical fact , will not help in understanding Xinjiang and the Asia as a whole.
History
Han Dynasty Chinese extended its power influence in the forms of territory and protectorates in today's Xinjiang, part of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan from 206 BC to 220 AD. Today's Xinjinag was again under the power influence (protectorates and territory) of Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) and became territory of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911AD). Peoples Republic of China has taken over the territory sovereignty over Xinjiang from Qing Dynasty and Republic of China. There is no dispute on the above fact.
The Uyghurs
Turkics/Turks are Turko-Mongolian Tribes originated from today's Mongolia area. The ancesters of Uyghurs (维吾尔) is Xiongnu (匈奴). The earliest written record of Xiongnu or Turk (Tujue, 突厥) in history was in Han Dynasty around 200BC. The earliest use of the term "Uyghur" in history was in Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD).
Uyghur Empires (742-848 AD, 回纥 or 回鶻) was in today's Mongolia with the capital at Ordu Baliq that located 300 km west of Ulaanbaatar (close to Town of Hotont) and it was annihilated by Kyrgyz tribe in 848 AD. The Kyrgyz destroyed and burned down every Uyghur cities and villages throughout the empire. Three groups of Uyghurs escaped from the annihilation. One group escaped to today's Gansu area and assimilated with Han Chinese. Another group escaped to today's Turpan in central Xinjiang. The last group escaped further west and scattered over today's Kashgar in south Xinjiang, Kyrgyzstan, Tajkistan and Uzbekistan.
Uyghurs has never had appreciable presence in north Xinjiang. They are mostly concentrated in Kashgar, Khotan, Aksu, and Kizilsu areas in south Xinjiang and Turpan in central Xinjiang. Uyghur is about 46% of the total population in Xinjiang, Han 40% and Kazak 7%.
The population
Xinjiang is home to several distinct ethnic groups of various religious traditions, however, the majority of the region's total population are adherents of Islam. Among ethnic groups who are of the Muslim faith, most notable are Muslim Turkic peoples including the Uyghurs, Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, Tatars and the Kazakhs; there are also Muslim Iranian peoples including Pamiris and the Sarikolis/Wakhis (often conflated as Pamiris); and Muslim Sino-Tibetan peoples such as the Hui (i.e. Muslim Han Chinese). Other PRC ethnic groups in the region include Han Chinese, Mongols, Russians, Xibes, and Manchus.
The minorities of Xinjiang have been exempted from the one-child policy and many Uyghur people emigrated out of Xinjiang to other parts of China, and consequently the percentage of Uyghur people in the total population of China has increased steadily(ref: wikepedia)
Xinjiang by itself is a multi-racial area even in ancient time, it was the part of the silk route, where various cultural interaction resulted in the formation of the political boundary of Xinjiang today. The many minority races provided the truth of these great cultural interaction, the silk route provided the cultural paths for the people of Europe, Asia to meet each others, it left a great impact on Asia's development, and also Europe. This is a great place.
We have to accept the fact that the current state and political boundary, and the people left in Xinjiang, was the result of the past history, where there were changes of borders, due to ancient wars. Some country or kingdom had disappeared, some new kingdom appear; some are gone, some survive. The transformation, the migration and cultural exchanges had resulted in the situation today. This great cultural integrations, and where the East met the West, resulted in a multiracial area, and not only Uyghurs, but many ethnic or minority races. Any outsider attempt to change the border for whatever reasons is unacceptable, the world need to accept the political history that had formed the current political border in ancient time.
The future of the nation, depend on their people, not the outsiders... We cannot turn the history wheel back to the ancient time.......on whatever reasons....but some politician are attempting to turn the wheel...and created new tension line for the place. Let their people and their nation decide what they want, we outsiders have no right to involve in their domestic affairs.....we can voice out if there is any serious human right violation like in Burma,in democratic manner. Any unnecessary involvement will disturb the daily livelihood of the people who have enjoyed their peaceful life for many generations.
When politician play their games, normal people suffered.
Xinjiang is for the people of Xinjiang, and for their nation- China. We pray for peace in Xinjiang.
