SRJK(C) Khay Boon, Rantau Panjang.

It was reported in the press, that one of respected former politician stated that Chinese from Chinese education do not like to mix with Malay and Indian.

I totally disagreed with his view, even I have not read his original statement , I hope that it is not from him or it may be a printing error.

I am from Chinese education during my primary school days. I still remember fondly that my text book taught us to respect and mixed with other races in Malaysia. My best friends are Indian ; and while working in Kelantan, Trengganu & Pahang (East Coast) , despite the cultural shock initially, the Malays are my good friends. I still have good relationship with the Iban and Kadazan and other natives of East Malaysia. Malay neighbor of my house in Kuantan are my best neighbor, and my daughter's good friends.

He may be a good strategist, and contribute much to the economy of the nation. But by using the race relationship as a strategy, it may be to support certain candidate during the political party election or to provide his personal view on the issue, it is still not a wise move as a former statesman.

To proved a point, that the view is wrong and not correct; and race relationship should not be politicized when party election is coming. Let me introduced to one Chinese primary school in Kelantan where the students were mixture of Malay and Chinese.

Rautau Panjang , a border town between Thailand and Malaysia, in the state of Kelantan. There is one Chinese primary school, where 98% of student population is Malay students. The school is located within the Malay kampong(village in Malay). Now the majority of the students are Malay students , due to the shifting of Chinese families to other places, may be due to better economic reasons. Financially the Chinese community still supported the school. The teachers are Chinese educated. The school is SRJK(C) Khay Boon, Rantau Panjang. Many of residents of the border town, were from the school, Malay or Chinese. Some of the students enter universities, locally and oversea. They have contributed greatly to the state, Kelantan and the nation, Malaysia.

The school was once even open to Malays from Thailand.

So the students graduated from this school has been having mixture of Malay and Chinese, Thai.... this relationship and bond start during their early education years. Now they are neighbour in the local town, in the Malay majority state; some of them are in other places in Malaysia. Their experience will played important role in racial harmony in the society.

The school is not the only school, there are many in the border town of Kelantan, Kedah, northern Perak. The small trends also catching up in big town, more Malay and Indian students are now in the Chinese Primary School, they are doing well, some are top student in school, even scoring A1 in Chinese language.

If Chinese of Chinese education background do not mixed with other races, I am sure the parents of these non-Chinese students will not let their children enter the Chinese primary school.
Chinese culture does not teach us to discriminate against any race; if there is any, it is their personal behaviour. The Chinese saying " Within the four seas, all man are brothers". This is the foundation of our primary school teaching, do you think what the politician said will happen?..........

The school remind me about the time when the Chinese education is facing problem, there are some Malay and Indian who strongly support the schools.

The Kelantan Chinese speak good Kelantanese dialect, some like a local Kelantanese Malay. They eat the same Kelantanese food, and even wear sarong.......it is the same in Kedah, Trengganu, Perlis and Penang........ they mixed well with their "brothers". They called them brother in their conversation.
If not because of the politician who always raised the issues during the state/national/party election. The relationship will be better. Let us not to take the action by lobbyist or NGO, on their agenda, which may sometime be against the policies of ruling party or government, as negative move or classified them as anti this or anti that. It should be taken as positive feedback from the people who voted them to the office, after all they are practicing their democratic right.

Otherwise the democracy is demo- crazy; who dare to pratice it.

So, what is the fuss?

槟城孔圣庙中华中学(SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian)

Chung Hwa Confucian School(孔圣庙中华中学), their full name in Malay is Sekolah Menegah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Hwa Confucian or SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian, located at No2, Psr Tembaga, 11600 P Pinang

School History

The ancestors of the Chinese community in Penang came from various backgrounds, various dialect groups, clans and provinces, and they settled here during different periods in Penang’s history. They took up various trades and occupations, and established many religious and social institutions. Later, they established their family here, and built schools for their descendents.

Chinese education was only introduced to Penang in the early 20th century, a century later than the English schools were introduced. Penang Free School was founded in 1816, followed by Hutchings School in 1821, Saints Xavier’s Institution and Convent Light Street in 1851, Methodist Boys’ School in 1881 (was known as Anglo-Chinese School), St George’s Girls’ School (1884) and Methodist Girls’ School (1895).

Cheong Fatt Tze (张弼士Chang Bishi), a wealthy businessman, was worried that new generations of Chinese might eventually forget their mother tongue and their own culture. He saw education as a means to bring the Chinese into the 20th century. He, therefore, donated funds to build Chung Hwa School (1904) in Penang and Ying Sin School (1905) in Singapore. These schools were the oldest formal Chinese Schools established in South-east Asia as a result of influence by the educational reforms in China in early 1900s, Mandarin is the school’s medium of instruction.

Cheong founded Chung Hwa School on 15th of May 1904 at “Ping Zhang Hui Guan”, Pitt Street, where the present Penang Chinese Town Hall is located. The school is one of the oldest formal Chinese Schools in Malaysia and the first to use Mandarin as the medium of instruction instead of the Chinese Dialects. It is the only overseas Chinese school to be sanctioned by the Qing dynasty government of China, which officially presented it with royal seals bearing the school's name through its consulate and Cheong Fatt Tze.

Initially, the school had only an enrollment of 160 students and 8 teachers, classes were only conducted for primary level. The administration of the school came under the patronage of the school's board of governors. The school was originally located at the rented premises at the present day site of the Penang Chinese Town Hall in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling. In 1908, it moved into its own building in Maxwell Road.

The school building was designed in 1907 by H.A. Neubronner, the same architect who designed the HongKong and Shanghai Bank building (was destroyed in second world war) and RBS Gallery(the USM-ABN-AMRO Arts and Cultural Centre).

Note: Anglo-Chinese School (ACS now Methodist Boy's School or MBS )was on the left side, after the school moved to a new site next to Suffolk House, the school building was subsequently occupied by Li Teik School. Unfortunately, both school buildings on Maxwell Road were demolished in the late 1970s due to KOMTAR project.

In 1912, the Republican overthrew the Qing dynasty government and took over the administration of China. In the same year, the Penang Confucian Association known as the Confucian Temple allocated funds to sponsor the school which came under the patronage of the association and the term “Confucian” became part of the name of the school. The school was then renamed Chung Hwa Confucian School.

In 1924, the school opened its first lower secondary classes, the enrolment increased to 900 pupils. The school progressed and prospered until the period of Japanese occupation, fortunately the school premises survived from the destruction of the second world war.

A year after independence was declared in Malaya, Chung Hwa Confucian Primary School became a government-aided school, which is known as a national type primary school. Meanwhile, Chung Hwa Confucian Secondary School remained under the administration of the school's board of governors. As the enrolment of students increased in 1964, Chung Hwa Confucian Primary School was divided into two schools, which are Chung Hwa Confucian (Morning) Primary School and Chung Hwa Confucian (Afternoon) Primary School.

In 1972, the secondary was moved to its current school premises in Island Park, at No. 2, Persiaran Tembaga. It was then renamed Chung Hwa Confucian High School. The primary schools remained at Maxwell Road.

The school premises at Maxwell Road served its last batch of students in 1979, and was demolished to make way for the Komtar project, they were moved to their current premises next to the State Mosque at Jalan Air Itam, at No. 2, Jalan Ibbetson. Both primary schools were then renamed Chung Hwa Confucian (A) Primary School and Chung Hwa Confucian (B) Primary School.

On 15th of May 2004, the school celebrated centennial with grand dinner at Chung Hwa Confucian High School's main hall, more than 1,000 guests attended the centenary dinner, and thousands of visitors visited the school's centenary exhibitions.

Today, Chung Hwa Confucian School provides primary, secondary and pre-university education. Classes include science, information technology, commerce, arts, sports and vocational trainings.

Shi Chung Branch School (槟城时中分校)

Shi Chung Branch School (时中分校) or in Malay it is Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Shih Chung Cawangan(short form SJKC Shih Chung Cawangan). The new school is located at Lebuh Nipah 2, Sg Nibong, Penang. Shi Chung Branch School is a Chinese primary school with a long history. It was one of the early Chinese school in Penang, established by Hakka Chinese.

The most interesting part of the school history is the former school building at Northam Road, called Goh Chan Lau, which was a heritage building, and attracted a lot of attention on its relocation and re-development by the new owner.

Knowing the school history is like knowing part of the history of Penang.

Shi Chung Branch School was an old school located at the junction of Transfer Road and Northam Road(now Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah). It was now an abandoned old pre-war bungalow. Northam Road at that time was known as Millionaire's Row,where when Capt Francis Light planned Georgetown, this road was reserved for European as first residential suburb. There were rows of European style bungalows, and only the richest in Penang stayed there. The local Chinese called it Ah Mor Lou(European Road), as there were many ah mor lau (European style bungalow with garden, tennis court, stables & driveways) there. It was a tremendous effort for any local Chinese to build a residential house there, it will reflect that their riches and properties was at par with the European. Cheah Tek Soon was able to construct a 5 storey bungalow there.

The building was a 5 storey Anglo- Chinese mansion owned by the late millionaire Cheah Tek Soon(谢德顺). The building was build in 1880. The local Chinese called it Goh Chan Lau( literally meant 5 storey bungalow). It was the first 5 storey building in Penang, and is a building which is historical, and a heritage building.

Cheah Tek Soon was a founder and partner of Penang Khean Guan Insurance Company(the first Chinese insurance company in the Straits Settlement , established on 10-7-1885) ;owner of Sin Eng Moh & company; Member of Penang Opium Syndicate (1880-1888) under Chop Ban Bee. He was one of the big 5 richest Hokkian family in Penang. Tthere is a street in Penang named after him, Tek Soon Street or Lebuh Tek Soon (德順路), an off road of Penang Road right across the KOMTAR , parallel with Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong and end by joining the remaining Jalan Maxwell(which was a road parallel with Prangin raod, separate by river/drain, but due to KOMTAR project, it was left with a short part at the end of road near Siah Boey, from Prangin Road to Jalan Magazine).

This building is also related to the Chinese Revolution of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the bungalow was sold by the son-in-law Mr Goh Say Eng (吴世荣)of Cheah Tek Soon's only daughter Cheah Liew Bee(谢柳美), to obtain finance to help the Chinese Revolution Movement by Dr Sun. The building was sold in 1908.

The new buyer was Tye Kee Yoon (戴喜云)of the Tye family , who was the Residency of Manchu Dynasty , China(清朝驻槟领事). The Tye family are Hakka from Daipu. There is a road in Penang named after him, Jalan Tai Kee Yoon 10150 Penang(an off road from Jalan Gurdwara, after Jalan Terang, road toward J Jelutong from the traffic light junction of Jalan Dato Kramat, Jalan Macalister near Komtar). In 1911, when the new China formed after overthrew the Manchu, Tye Siok Guan( 戴淑原) become the Chinese Consul of the new China, Republic of China (1912-1930),Tye Siok Guan is the son of Tai Kee Yoon. The building continue to be used as the Consul's office.

The building later become Bellevue Hotel or Raffles-by-the-sea hotel, imitated the famous Raffles Hotel of Singapore. But it was a failure, and the hotel was closed soon.

1915, It was another Hakka millionaire, Leong Fee or Liang Pi Joo 1857-1911(梁碧如) who started to use the building as Pi Joo Girl School, but all the school expenses was supported by Tye family's estate. Leong Fee was a Hakka from Mei Xian, Dabu (born in 1857, and left for Penang in 1876, 6 months later he migrated to Ipoh. He was member of Perak State Council 1895-1908 and Federal Council). But the school was stopped when the colonial government passed a statutory act required the registration of all schools. (note: Leong Fee is a friend of Cheong Fatt Tze, he had constructed a mansion at 7, Lebuh Leith, Penang , opposite Cheong Fatt Tze's mansion, beside St Xavier's Institution. The building is now a heritage building , owned by Christian Brothers, it was once part of the school, but now leased to Equator Art Academy)

It was then leased for the Government Girl's School in 1920.

Shi Chung School(the main school) is located in Love Lane, Penang. The school was established by Hakka people. In 1937, Shi Chung School was over crowded, and the building was not able to cater for more new students. The Tye brothers decided to renovate the old Goh Chan Lau building, and established the new branch school for Shi Chung School there , it was named Shi Chung Branch School(时中分校).

Shi Chung School or 时中学校 or Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Shih Chung (short form SJKC Shih Chung) is still located at Love Lane, Penang.

The old Shi Chung Branch School(时中分校) which was located at Goh Chan Lau building, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Penang, was later sold by the trustee , when the restriction period in the will expired( after 3 generations). The building had been purchased by new owner, Malaysia Vegetable Oil Refinery Sdn Bhd for RM9.5M in 1993. The buyer is the major shareholder of the group Stanford Raffles by the Sea Sdn Bhd. It is now an abandoned building, but was intended to be developed as a 3 blocks columbarium of 9 and 10 storeys. The Penang people started a state wide campaign against the plan. It is a historical heritage building, it should be retained at all cost for cultural purpose.

(note: The Tye family trust was an early example of a Hakka family that left a will for the descendants, which provided that the family estate including the Goh Chan Lau cannot be sold for at least 3 generation, and 10% of estate revenue is to be donate for education purpose. It is Chinese belief that the estate of a family cannot passed more than 3 generation or will be finished by the 3rd generation. The will of Tye family provide clauses to mitigate the risk on that belief and provided clauses in the will, that the family estate cannot be sold prior to 3 generation. It also provide clause that 10% of estate revenue to be used for education purpose. This reflected the wisdom of the Tye family, and their trust was able to support the Chinese education in Penang for long time.)

The school was then shifted to the new school building at Sg Nibong.

This is the story of how Hakka people contributed & played their role in the area of education, in Penang.

The New School

The new school located at Sg Nibong, from the donation by the people. It is now one of the premier Chinese primary school in Penang.
