29-1-2009 Tumpat & Pengkalan Kubor
From Kota Bharu, we traveled by car to Sultan Yahya Putra Bridge. Then go north to the town of Wakaf Bharu(where the train station is located), and then to Tumpat. We did not go to Tumpat town,but go straight to the Pengkalan Kubor free trade zone.
Tumpat is situated at the end of Malayan Raiway, which linked Kelantan to the West Malaysia at Gemas, Johore. The train travelled from Tumpat , Pasir Mas, Kuala Krai to Gua Musang in Kelantan, then go to Kuala Lipis, Mentakab and until Gemas, Johore. There are 140,989 people(2005),with the majority being Malays. There are many Siamese Malaysian live in the area.
There are also many Buddhist temples in Tumpat. This reflect the multi-culture of the Malaysian cultural identity; and also the tolerance of Malaysian people, especially Kelantan, an Islamic state.
Pengkalan Kubor is the border immigration check point, at the border to Tak Bai(Thai: ตากใบ),Thailand. It is also the duty free zone & popular for electronic goods,kitchen wares and clothes. The ladies are having a good time doing shopping.
On the way back to Kota Bharu, we stopped at a restaurant located by the road side. We have some good time for Siamese food. Som Tam(Thai: ส้มตำ)- a spicy salad made from shredded unripened papaya, lakna(a type of koay teow), ...and others.
We also visited KADA (Lembaga Kemajuan Pertanian Kemubu)market.This is a small village market, where the villagers are selling their farm products directly to the ultimate consumers,instead of selling to the agent. This will provide better income for the local farmers. The products including fruits(included durian, mangosteen,& mango), vegetables, meat products, fresh water fishes. Most of the traders there are woman, a typical Kelantan culture.
